Alzheimer’s is on the rise

  • Monthly granularity was limited to 1999 through 2019.
  • No cases were reported prior to 1999.
  • Linear regression and Prophet models were run against this historical data.
  • Polynomial regression used due to linear regression assumptions not being met.

Current State

More recent data shows growth slightly more than expected, reaching a 36 Crude Rate by the end of 2023.

# of symptoms and comorbid count are skewed right

  • Regarding number of symptoms, most cases only show about one symptom.
  • Additionally, almost all cases of Alzheimer’s deaths had underlying causes.

# of symptoms and comorbid count are skewed right

  • Those within the age groups of 65-74 and 75-84 represent those highest at risk of death from Alzheimer’s.
  • Obesity is one of the most common groups, but those with normal BMI are 2nd.
  • “Mini-Mental State Examination” levels are most logical, but there were still significant cases of those with mild and moderate levels.

NEXT STEP OPPORTUNITIES

  • Stratify forecasts further by region or ethnicity for targeted insights.
  • Conduct statistical testing (e.g., t-tests, ANOVA) to assess group-level significance.
  • Explore modeling MMSE severity scores to predict outcomes.
  • Perform comorbidity clusters that elevate risk the most.
